Walking: Your Most Underrated Recovery Tool
No equipment, no cost, endlessly adjustable — walking may be the most underrated tool in your recovery kit.

Walking rarely feels like "proper" exercise, which is exactly why it's so easy to skip. But for many people in rehabilitation, it's one of the most valuable habits there is.
Why walking earns its place:
- Gentle, rhythmic movement supports circulation, which carries nutrients to recovering tissues
- It's low-impact and self-paced — you control the speed, distance and terrain
- Time outdoors doubles up with daylight and stress-relief benefits
- It builds general stamina, which many patients find makes their programme exercises feel easier over time
How to start small:
1. Begin with a distance that feels comfortable — even 5-10 minutes counts
2. Increase gradually: add a few minutes each week rather than doubling overnight
3. Choose even ground first; save hills and rough paths for later
4. Use the talk test — you should be able to hold a conversation while walking
One important check:
Everyone's situation is different, and for some programmes your therapist may want to guide how much walking to add and when. A quick message through the app is all it takes to be sure.
Today, pick one short journey you'd normally drive or ride — and walk it instead.
